Because Celiac Disease On The Rise?


Almost five times as many Americans have celiac disease today than in 1950, a recent study, 9133 young adults found in Warren Air Force Base. Another recent report found that rates of celiac disease has doubled every 15 years since 1974. Debilitating gastrointestinal disease is now estimated to affect around 1 100 American. Why is exposure to gluten - a protein found in barley, wheat, rye and oats as possible, and other everyday products, such as some brands of lipsticks, lip balms, and vitamins, making it ill than ever?

What is celiac disease? Debilitating gastrointestinal disorder, celiac disease is a chronic autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten. When people with the disease to eat foods that contain gluten, the detrimental reaction occurs in the mucosa of the small intestine, inhibiting its ability to absorb certain nutrients. This can lead to vitamin deficiencies and malnutrition, although apparently a person eats a healthy diet.

What are the symptoms? One reason why this is an autoimmune disease often goes undiagnosed for as long as 10 years is that symptoms vary from person to person. The most common warning signs of celiac disease include abdominal pain, bloating, gassiness, diarrhea, constipation, lactose intolerance, nausea and fatigue.

Are you serious? Because celiac disease deprives the body of essential nutrients, people who have an increased risk of anemia and osteoporosis. People who have celiac disease and do not eat a gluten-free diet also face a greater threat of colon cancer and intestinal lymphoma. The study found that the air base for 45 years of follow up, people with celiac disease were four times more likely to die.

What causes it? Although the cause is not fully understood, two genes known to be important, said Dr. Tennyson.

Why are rates increasing? One theory is that today's grain-based foods contain gluten more than they did in the past. Another is that children are exposed to gluten at an early age, contributing to a greater risk. An explanation often suggested is the "hygiene hypothesis", the theory that we are too clean for our own good, resulting in a weakening of the immune system, since they are not exposed to many diseases.

Many gluten-free foods are actually higher in calories than their counterparts containing gluten, and therefore lead to weight gain, says Dr. Tennyson. "One of the pitfalls is that these foods are often highly processed and high in fat. Some ingredients used are low in fiber, such as white rice flour, tapioca and corn starch that causes constipation. Having a gluten-free diet has all the health benefits if you do not have celiac disease? Maybe. In a randomized study in which neither researchers or participants knew whether they were eating foods containing gluten or not, 68 percent of people who believed that a gluten-free diet improved their gastrointestinal symptoms reported worsening of their symptoms when they were fed with food containing gluten without their knowledge. But the study only examined 34 patients. Using a gluten-free diet for other conditions such as autism, is very controversial.

How credible labeling gluten free? While such diverse products as brands of lipstick chocolate and many kinds of groceries carry gluten-free labeling, right now, there is no legal standards to be observed in the United States. In 27 other countries labeled as gluten-free foods can not have more than 20 parts per million of gluten. Nearly three years after the deadline for the FDA for a rule to define "gluten free", the agency finally gets to face serious risks of dangerous people with celiac disease may be facing because of misleading labeling .

What treatment? While there is no cure, symptoms can be effectively managed with dietary changes in order to avoid all gluten in foods. However, if you suspect you have celiac disease, gluten-free diet, do not start until you have tested well, because the removal of gluten can lead to misleading results, says Dr. Tennyson.
