The Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, has canceled a visit to the United States amid growing concern about the debt crisis of the country.
His office said he decided to return as "next week is particularly critical" in efforts to ensure the recovery of loans from the neighboring country.
Greek media said he made the decision after consulting with the Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos.
Mr. Papandreou had planned to attend the General Assembly and meetings of the IMF.
The decision comes a day after the euro zone ministers postponed a decision to release more money to Greece.
Eurozone leaders will now decide whether to release in October eight billion euros next ($ 11 billion, £ 7 billion).

Mr. Papandreou was on his return to Greece from London after the cancellation of his trip to New York earlier, local media reported.
"The prime minister has decided to postpone his planned visit to the United States, because next week is especially important to deal with the decisions taken on 21 July in the euro area and the initiatives that Greece should have" a declaration of his office.
Eurozone leaders agreed on a rescue plan for the second EUR 109bn Greece to a meeting in Brussels in July. It is still to receive the first 110 billion rescue plan that was adopted in May last year, in installments.
One official said Mr. Papandreou has canceled his visit to focus on fiscal policy, which was the key to securing loans.
"The Prime Minister took the view that does not come off. He wants to make sure that all the commitments of Greece [its EU partners] are satisfied," government spokesman Ilyas Mossialos told Reuters news agency.
October, the decision of the loan is based on estimates of three banks, the European Commission, the IMF and the European Central Bank.
There are concerns that they may decide that Greece has fallen behind in its goal of savings - that the government was forced to impose a property tax invited by the recession fears that it would miss its goal to cap its budget 7.6% of GDP.
Mr. Venizelos has scheduled a conference call with three donors on Monday.
Requires Greece to accelerate the austerity and disunity among the governments and politicians to support members of the euro zone debt, sparked turmoil on financial markets.
But the chief ministers of the Eurogroup, Jean-Claude Juncker, said that Greece has been "significant progress" and satisfied with the commitment of Athens' in a rigorous program.
