Bahamas capital of Nassau, as strong winds, but escaped the worst

Hurricane Irene has destroyed dozens of homes in the Bahamas as it roared over the archipelago.

Irene is currently a category three storm with winds of 185 kmh (115 mph), and is expected to strengthen as it moves toward the eastern U.S. coast.




Beautiful Bay settlement in the remote Acklins island was devastated, officials said the Bahamas, but there were no immediate reports of casualties.

A huge storm brought flooding and power cuts throughout the Caribbean.

At 1500 GMT on Thursday, Irene is 115 kilometers (75 miles) north northeast of the capital Bahamas, Nassau, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami.

The storm approached Abaco Island in the northwest Bahamas, forecasters said.

Irene projected path is expected to have much of the east coast of central and northern Florida on Thursday and Friday morning, according to the NHC.

Hurricane forecast to approach the coast of North Carolina on Saturday.

"Stay safe"

Belle Bay Acklins Island in the southern Bahamas were hit hard, the National Emergency Management (NEMA) said.

On its website, said The Tribune home was "completely won or lost the entire roof, power lines were felled and trees blocking roads."

Crooked Island saw wind gusts over 160 km / h, with a roof of a school "completely torn and the windows blow out," said NEMA.

And 'Mayaguana Island, Irene removed the power and injured at least 40 homes.

Authorities are asking people across the Bahamas to stay within a safe and secure structure.

Nassau, is the most populous island of New Providence, was expected to see floods.

So far, there have been no reports of casualties.

"As a general statement, we do a fair job as the management of hurricanes in personal injury, we hope, is not significant," the Bahamas Hubert Ingraham Prime Minister told the Associated Press (AP) news agency reported.

Emergency Help

Irene on Tuesday, throwing the British overseas territory of Turks and Caicos with strong winds and heavy rain.

Hundreds of people in the Dominican Republic have sought refuge in schools and churches after they were displaced by flooding rain. A man was reported killed in the floods.

Irene has also caused flooding in neighboring Haiti, where at least two people were dead.

Puerto Rico, the storm knocked out power to more than half of the island and impact on water availability for over 100,000 people.

A woman of 62 died trying to cross a swollen river near the capital, San Juan, AP reported.

And Tuesday, more than 80 families in the town of Canovanas lost their homes when the river rose suddenly in the pouring rain, El Nuevo Dia newspaper.

US President Barack Obama has declared an emergency, making the island a protectorate of the United States who is eligible for federal assistance.
